Sad songs say so much

This week, we explored the musical side of WGD, working with choreographer Misha on a wacky dance and welcoming sound designer Lindsay to the team. Young Jean Lee specifies an indie pop pre-show mix, so we’ve been questioning what that means and continuing to deepen the music arrangements with our excellent music director Steve. Ilana dropped some music-turgy and pointed out the resonances of the synthy, ’80s post-punk music of bands like Joy Division in the music of WGD,¬†specifically in songs like “No Comfort for the Lonely.”

Here’s the music video for Joy Division’s “Love Will Tear Us Apart.” Lead singer Ian Curtis struggled with life-long feelings of loneliness and depression, and the band is known for couching downbeat lyrics about human sadness and suffering in a joyful, upbeat sound.
