Sad songs say so much

This week, we explored the musical side of WGD, working with choreographer Misha on a wacky dance and welcoming sound designer Lindsay to the team. Young Jean Lee specifies an indie pop pre-show mix, so we’ve been questioning what that means and continuing to deepen the music arrangements with our excellent music director Steve. Ilana dropped some music-turgy and pointed out the resonances of the synthy, ’80s post-punk music of bands like Joy Division in the music of WGD, specifically in songs like “No Comfort for the Lonely.”

Here’s the music video for Joy Division’s “Love Will Tear Us Apart.” Lead singer Ian Curtis struggled with life-long feelings of loneliness and depression, and the band is known for couching downbeat lyrics about human sadness and suffering in a joyful, upbeat sound.
